May 10, 2010 For the third time in 4 years, the Mario Lemieux/Centres Dentaires Lapointe Trophy awarded to the best 15 year old Prospect (Rookie of the year) in the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey league has come from the Lac St. Louis Lions - this years winner- Michael Matheson!
Michael was honoured at the league's awards banquet following in the footsteps of recent Lions winners, Louis Leblanc '07 and Yasin Cisse '08 who were selected as awards winners in back-to-back seasons. Despite a broken ankle that kept Matheson away from the ice for 2 months midway through the year, Michael earned his right to the award with a stellar playoff run in which he helped lead the Lions to a league finals berth after successfully eliminating the number 2, 3 and 5 ranked teams in the Quebec Midget AAA hockey league. Matheson is also the number 1 ranked prospect for the 2010 Quebec Major Junior draft to be held on June 5th. Most Improved Student/Athlete - Anthony Cortese Anthony Cortese was awarded the Rosaire-Morin / La Cage aux Sports as most improved academic player. This is the third time in the past 5 seasons a member of the Lac St. Louis Lions Hockey organization has won this award. Past winners were Mark Barberio '06 (member of the QMJHL League Champions Moncton Wildcats) and Michael Lemieux '09. During the past 5 seasons, when the present management group began operations, the Lac St. Louis Lions have had the most individual award winners than any other Midget AAA team in Quebec. Also in the past 5 seasons, the Lac St. Louis Lions organization has the most playoff game wins, the most playoff round wins, the only team to reach the league semi-finals 3 times and one of 2 teams to reach the league final series twice! 2010-2011 Selection Process Begins The Lions look to continue their winning tradition as they begin their selection process for the 2010-2011 season. Potential players have been skating each weekend in May vying for the 20 roster spots that will be available this August. Competition is fierce again this year and the Lions are excited about the intensity level and competitiveness thus far of each individual player. The Lions continue the selection process this Saturday and Sunday all day at the DDO Civic Center. Source: Lac St. Louis Lions |
